**Lesson Plan: Phonemic Awareness for Primary 1**
**Lesson Title:** Exploring Phonemic Awareness
**Grade:** Primary 1 (Kindergarten)
**Duration:** 45 minutes
**Objective:**
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Identify and articulate individual sounds (phonemes) in simple words.
2. Blend phonemes to form words.
3. Segment words into individual phonemes.
**Materials Needed:**
- Alphabet flashcards
- Picture cards
- Whiteboard and markers
- Short, simple storybook with clear, repetitive phonemic patterns
- Handout with pictures and corresponding words
**Lesson Outline:**
1. **Introduction (5 minutes)**
- Greet the students and sit them in a circle.
- Briefly explain what phonemic awareness is: "It's all about the sounds we hear in words."
- Warm-up activity: Play a quick game of "I Spy" with sounds. ("I spy something that starts with 'b'.")
2. **Teacher Modeling (10 minutes)**
- Use alphabet flashcards to show and produce individual sounds.
- Blend sounds to make simple words (e.g., /c/ - /a/ - /t/ = "cat").
- Display a word and segment it into phonemes (e.g., "dog" = /d/-/o/-/g/).
3. **Guided Practice (10 minutes)**
- Show picture cards and ask students to identify the first sound they hear. E.g., show a picture of a sun (s).
- Practice blending with the class using CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. Use a whiteboard to write and blend the word "hat" by stretching the sounds and then saying the word quickly.
- Practice segmenting with the class by picking a word and breaking it into sounds together. E.g., "log" = /l/ - /o/ - /g/.
4. **Group Activities (15 minutes)**
- **Activity 1**: Blending Sounds Station
- Place students in small groups.
- Provide them with flashcards showing individual letters and ask them to create and say a word by blending the sounds together.
- **Activity 2**: Segmenting Sounds Station
- Students receive a handout with pictures and their corresponding words.
- Have them point to and say the picture's name, then break the word into its sounds.
- Rotate the students between the stations.
5. **Application (5 minutes)**
- Read a short, simple storybook aloud to the class.
- After reading, ask questions that involve phonemic awareness. ("What sound do you hear at the beginning of 'cat'?")
6. **Assessment and Closure (5 minutes)**
- Call on individual students to orally segment and blend a word.
- Give positive reinforcement and help any students who might struggle.
- Summarize the lesson: "Today we learned how to listen for and say the sounds in words. Great job, everyone!"
- End with a short song or chant that emphasizes phonemic sounds.
**Differentiation:**
- For advanced students, introduce more complex words and encourage them to try blending longer words.
- For students needing extra support, focus on initial sounds and provide more practice with simpler words.
**Homework:**
- Send home a worksheet with pictures and their corresponding words for students to practice blending and segmenting with their parents or guardians.
**Reflection:**
- After the lesson, reflect on which activities were most effective and which students may need additional support. Adjust future lesson plans based on this reflection.
